Turnitin

Turnitin's official purchase guide says subscriptions are designed for educational institutions, not individuals. A school or organisation requests a quote and an account representative discusses requirements. Turnitin tells individuals who need personal similarity checking to consider iThenticate, a related product with individual credit options.

If your school already licenses Turnitin, use the approved institutional access. Buying access from an unofficial reseller may breach terms, expose student work and produce reports outside your institution's authorised process.

AI-writing reports

Turnitin's current AI-writing report:

• requires 300 to 30,000 words of qualifying long-form prose;
• supports English, Spanish and Japanese, with some English-only alteration categories;
• highlights likely AI-generated and AI-paraphrased passages;
• treats the AI percentage as separate from the Similarity score; and
• suppresses numeric scores below 20% because they have a higher false-positive incidence.

Genutext offers a short free AI signal and paid document scans up to the selected credit limit. Paid reports provide an overall score and sentence-level signals where available, with an optional email report.

The outputs are not directly interchangeable. A percentage may use a different model, eligible-text definition and threshold. Do not compare the two numbers without first reading what AI-detection percentages mean.

Similarity and source matching

Turnitin's Similarity Report is a mature institutional product that compares submissions against the databases included in the institution's licence and setup. It provides matched passages and sources for educator review.

Genutext offers optional web source matching alongside AI detection on a paid scan. Genutext does not claim that this source set is equivalent to Turnitin's databases. An individual choosing between them should ask whether the required evidence is ordinary public-web overlap or institutionally integrated comparison against a broader licensed corpus.

Institutional workflow and evidence

Turnitin's advantage is not only a detector. Institutions can integrate assignment submission, similarity review, grading and academic-integrity processes. Permissions, student notices, repository settings and report access can be governed centrally.

Genutext does not currently provide an LMS, grading workflow or misconduct case system. It can supply a first-pass report to an individual, but the user remains responsible for:

• having authority to upload the material;
• using a service approved by the relevant organisation;
• interpreting the report within policy;
• sharing evidence fairly; and
• avoiding a decision based only on an automated score.

Turnitin's own March 2026 guide says its model may misidentify text and should not be the sole basis for adverse action. The UK OIA expects detection-software interpretation to be evidence-based and shared with the student.

Which route fits an individual educator

Use institutional Turnitin access when

• your organisation already licenses it;
• student submissions and consent notices run through its approved workflow;
• the Turnitin comparison database or LMS integration is required; or
• a formal institutional process expects that report.

Consider Genutext when

• you are genuinely buying as an individual;
• you need occasional checks rather than an institution-wide contract;
• public-web source matching and an AI signal meet the preliminary need;
• pay-as-you-go pricing is more appropriate than recurring access; and
• the organisation permits the upload and review method.
