Can Turnitin Detect Edited or Paraphrased AI Writing?
Separate human revision, generative editing and AI paraphrasing, then focus on the policy and process evidence a detector cannot reconstruct.

It can. Turnitin's current English-language AI report includes categories for text likely generated by AI and text likely generated by AI and then modified by an AI paraphraser. Its model updates also describe detection of likely AI-bypasser use.
That does not mean every edited AI passage will be flagged—or that every flagged passage was edited by AI. Editing changes the text the model sees, so the result may rise, fall or move between categories. A detector cannot recreate the hidden drafting process with certainty.
What counts as edited AI writing
“Edited AI writing” can describe very different processes:
- correcting spelling in a human-written draft;
- asking a tool to improve grammar or tone;
- asking a generative system to rewrite sentences;
- paraphrasing an AI-generated draft by hand;
- combining human and generated paragraphs; or
- using a purpose-built paraphraser or bypass tool.
Those processes may look similar in the final document but have different implications under an assessment policy. The important question is not whether editing happened. It is whether the particular assistance was permitted, declared where required, and consistent with the learning being assessed.
How Turnitin labels paraphrased text
Turnitin's English report currently separates likely AI-generated text, including text it believes may have been modified by a bypasser, from likely AI-generated text that was also likely AI-paraphrased. The report uses different highlights for the categories.
The classification still applies only to qualifying long-form prose. Turnitin requires at least 300 words, and its documentation says short or unconventional formats are not reliably processed. A category label is therefore a model output about eligible passages—not a forensic finding about the software used.
Turnitin introduced AI-paraphrasing detection in 2024 and added likely bypasser detection in August 2025. Its February 2026 model update changed detection performance without changing the report's interface. Date the report when comparing results, because model versions change.

Why human editing changes a score
AI detectors classify observable language patterns. Revision changes those patterns.
A light edit may leave the structure and statistical regularities of a generated draft largely intact. A substantive human revision may change the argument, order, examples, evidence, rhythm and vocabulary. Conversely, polishing a human draft into uniform, predictable prose can sometimes move it closer to patterns a detector associates with generated writing.
This is why there is no honest conversion rule such as “editing 30% makes a passage safe” or “a paraphraser always raises the score”. Any page promising a fixed outcome is ignoring differences in detector version, source model, genre, language, length and revision method.

Can AI-assisted editing trigger a detector
Yes, but a trigger does not reveal the exact assistance.
Conventional spell-checking usually changes isolated errors. Generative editing can replace whole phrases, reorganise paragraphs or create new prose. The boundary is not the brand name of the tool; many products now contain both conventional and generative features.
Before submission, a student should ask:
- Did the tool correct surface errors or generate expression and content?
- Does the assessment guidance permit that use?
- Must the use be acknowledged?
- Can the student explain and support the resulting argument?
Educators should apply the same distinction. A detected pattern does not show whether a tool was used for permitted accessibility support, language development, prohibited generation, or not at all.
What to review instead of chasing a score
For students
- Keep the original draft as well as the edited version.
- Preserve version history rather than repeatedly replacing a file.
- Record generative prompts or outputs when policy requires disclosure.
- Keep notes that show where the argument and evidence came from.
- Ask for clarification when “proofreading” and “AI assistance” are not defined.
For educators
- Compare the flagged text with drafts, notes and cited sources.
- Ask the student to explain a key choice or develop the argument orally.
- Distinguish writing quality from evidence of authorship.
- Consider permitted support and reasonable adjustments.
- Follow the published process rather than creating a score threshold after submission.
Turnitin itself says the AI report should not be used as the sole basis for adverse action. The UK's OIA similarly expects academic judgement to be evidence-based and students to receive the allegation and supporting evidence.
Frequently asked questions
Can Turnitin detect ChatGPT after I rewrite it in my own words?
It may still flag some passages, but no detector can reliably reconstruct every drafting step. The relevant course rule and evidence of your writing process matter more than predicting a score.
Does Grammarly or another editing tool count as AI use?
It depends on the feature and the assessment policy. A spell correction and a generative rewrite are different actions even when they appear in the same product. Check and disclose the actual assistance used.
Can manual editing cause a false positive?
Any human text can be misclassified. Highly regular or formulaic prose, short eligible samples and model mismatch can contribute, but a result alone cannot identify the cause.
Should I use a humaniser to lower the score?
No. That may breach policy, distort meaning and create a misleading account of authorship. Build the work transparently, retain drafts and follow the assessment's AI-use rules.
