Which AI Detector Is Closest to Turnitin? What the Evidence Supports
Why score-matching is structurally impossible, what comparison tests found, and the pre-submission checks that actually help.

Students ask this hoping to preview their Turnitin AI score before submission. The evidence-based answer is uncomfortable but useful: no public detector can reliably predict Turnitin's number — for structural reasons, not just quality ones. Knowing why will save you money and point you at checks that actually help.
The short answer
Turnitin's AI model is proprietary, runs only inside institutional accounts, and reports a coverage number (the share of qualifying prose flagged) under its own text-eligibility rules — while most public tools report a probability or confidence. Two systems that define the number differently cannot be "close" in any dependable way, and detectors routinely disagree on identical text. Any site claiming to show "your Turnitin AI score" without Turnitin is guessing — or worse.
Why no tool can match Turnitin's score
Four structural reasons, all from public documentation:
- Different question. Turnitin reports the percentage of qualifying prose classified as AI-like (its report guide); GPTZero reports a document probability; Originality.ai reports model confidence. The same "34%" means three different things.
- Different eligible text. Turnitin excludes short passages, lists, references and non-qualifying content (file requirements); public tools each apply their own rules. Different denominators, different numbers.
- Different models and training. Turnitin's architecture whitepaper describes its own model and testing; it shares no weights with public tools.
- Different display behaviour. Turnitin suppresses 1–19% as an asterisk. A public tool showing "12%" is displaying a band Turnitin would refuse to display at all.
What does Turnitin use under the hood?
Its own model — Turnitin does not license a third-party public detector. The company describes an in-house classifier trained on academic writing, with a published claim of a document false-positive rate under 1% for documents with 20%+ AI writing and a sentence-level false positive rate of about 4% (their explainer). So "what AI detector does Turnitin use?" has a one-word answer: Turnitin's.

What comparison tests have actually found
Public head-to-head evidence is thin and gets stale quickly, but two kinds exist:
- Vendor-run similarity tests. Originality.ai has published a test comparing detectors' verdicts against Turnitin's across hundreds of student essays (their colleges post links their research). Vendor tests are informative but self-interested — read the protocol, not just the winner.
- Independent academic testing. Peer-reviewed comparisons (Weber-Wulff et al., 2023, and successors — see our accuracy review) consistently find no tool dominates across text types, and that paraphrasing degrades every tool tested. None of these establish a reliable Turnitin-score predictor.
The honest summary: agreement rates vary by text type, and no published test supports "use tool X to know your Turnitin score".
The "free Turnitin checker" trap
Search results for this question are full of sites with Turnitin's name in the domain offering "free Turnitin AI checks, unlimited, no signup". Treat them with suspicion:
- They are not Turnitin, whatever the domain says, and cannot produce Turnitin's number.
- UK sector press has documented an "illicit AI detection economy" of resold and imitation pre-submission checks, warning that such services can't guarantee your text isn't retained.
- Uploading your unsubmitted essay to an anonymous site is a real risk: your draft can be stored, resold or surface in a similarity database later.
Genutext is also not Turnitin and says so plainly — the difference is what happens to your text: it is processed and discarded, never stored or added to a repository.
What to do before you submit instead
- Find out whether your university even runs Turnitin's AI indicator — many UK universities have switched it off.

- Keep your drafts. Whatever any detector says, process evidence is what protects you.
