How to Check for AI Plagiarism: What Each Tool Actually Finds

"AI plagiarism" bundles two different questions: was this written by a machine? and was this taken from somewhere? No single signal answers both — so a proper check runs two analyses and reads them together. Here's how to do it, whichever tools you use.
What "AI plagiarism" actually means
People use the phrase for three different situations:
- Machine-written work presented as one's own — an authorship question. Plagiarism checkers mostly miss this, because fresh AI text matches no existing source.
- Copied work — the classic case. AI detectors mostly miss this, because copied human prose is human prose.
- AI text that itself reproduces sources — models can echo training material or fabricate near-quotes; only source matching notices when generated text overlaps something real.
Because the failure modes are opposite, AI detection and plagiarism detection are genuinely different checks — the reason combined scans exist.
Check one: AI-writing detection
An AI detector estimates how machine-like the prose patterns are, returning a score and (in better tools) sentence-level highlights. What to know before trusting it:
- Scores mean different things per tool — coverage, probability or confidence (what a percentage means).
- Length matters: under ~300 words, results are unreliable or refused.
- False positives are real, clustering in formal, templated and non-native prose.
- A result is a signal for review, never proof — every credible vendor says so.

Check two: plagiarism source matching
A plagiarism checker compares the text against indexed sources — web pages, publications and (in institutional tools) submission databases — returning matched passages with the sources named. What to know:
- Matches are evidence you can inspect, unlike an AI score: the source is right there to compare.
- Similarity ≠ plagiarism. Quotations, references and common phrases match legitimately; a similarity score needs interpreting before anyone says "plagiarism".

A step-by-step workflow
- Define the question. Are you checking your own draft before submission, or reviewing someone else's work? The stakes decide how carefully you document.
- Prepare clean text. Continuous prose, 300+ words where possible; extract text from PDFs and check the extraction (long documents need care).
